PIPER HOUSE
SCARBOROUGH WOLLONGONG
SCARBOROUGH WOLLONGONG
Traditional lands of the Dharawal people
Perched on the rugged cliffs of northern Illawarra on the NSW South Coast the original Scarborough ‘fibro shack’ on a narrow block has been home for three generations of the one family.
The new bespoke house design Wollongong is a modest composition of tiered levels following the slope of the land with connections to the surrounding landscape and sympathetic to it’s original unimposing past. A distinctive hit and miss wall addresses privacy for the street facing façade whilst achieving a welcoming and sense of openness from filtered light into the entrance. The large custom built blackbutt entrance door leads to a carefully considered central spine instantly prioritising views of the ocean. A vibrant yellow spiral staircase is an unexpected alternative journey through the design, which is reflection of the family’s energetic spirit.
Central to the design of the home was providing cooking and entertaining spaces which take prime position to the rear of the home overlooking the cliffs and capturing the ever changing coastal views. The adaptable layout comprises shared gathering spaces scattered throughout the home consisting of quiet sitting rooms, workspaces and an art studio to accommodate both family and guests.
Exposure to the harsh Australian coastal conditions steered the design to the use of durable materials like Colorbond and Weathertex, engineered to withstand the environment. The light restrained palette in combination with blackbutt timber and growing succulent plantings further the home’s connection to its stunning natural setting.
