The Bird House
Situated on the crest of Mountain Avenue in the beautiful seaside suburb of Austinmer this immaculate single story cottage had been built out and was becoming enveloped by modern two storey dwellings and had lost their magnificent vistas to the mountains and across the sea.
The brief was to retain the existing style in a second storey addition while regaining lost outlooks. Source same windows, cladding, roof pitch, etc. The second storey addition was accessed through a large blackbutt staircase in the previous study area, which now fills the ground level with copious amounts of natural light through a high louvred northern window. The occupants are avid bird watches and nature photographers therefore the placement of the windows enable vistas where they could place camera equipment to capture local bird life.
As you arrive at the top of the stair you are greeted with the iconic vistas of Wollongong’s northern beaches meeting the mountains. The construction team was meticulous in building and managed while also taking care to maintain the established native gardens.
